How Does the Ionic Ceramic Hair Straightener Work?

If you have curly, frizzy or kinky hair, you have probably used an ionic ceramic hair straightener  before.  These tools look like curling irons, however the barrels are flat.  Not that you have anything else better to do, but have you ever wondered how they work?  Of course we know the heat plays a part in the straightening process, but it‘s a little bit more involved than that!  Here’s how they work.

Cross section of a hair strand.

Cross section of a hair strand.

Every strand of hair has a cuticle, cortex, and medulla.  The cuticle is the outside layer of the strand, and the medulla is the center or core of the hair strand.  The cortex is situated between the two, and contains hydrogen bonds.  If you’ve ever broken a carrot in half, and looked at the break, you’ll see the medulla right in the center.  The hair strand is built similarly.

When heat is applied to the strand of hair using a ceramic hair straightener iron, the hydrogen bonds are broken down, and the hair becomes flexible.  This allows the hair to become straight.  However, when moisture is introduced to the cortex through the cuticle, the hydrogen re-bonds itself, and the hair goes back to its natural state.  That’s why you see most girls going to great lengths to keep their hair dry!  The slightest bit of moisture or dampness will reverse the straightening technique in seconds.

Cheap flat irons usually have a fake ceramic plate installed in them, which don‘t last very long.  These fake plates are often coated with a material that wears off, which is very damaging to the hair.  The best ceramic hair straightener will have plates made from 100% baked authentic ceramic.

A quality iron will have baked plates made of real ceramic, and sprayed on layers.  These ionic hair irons  usually get hot in about ten to fifteen seconds, and are far less damaging than cheap ceramic hair straighteners.

There are several different types of flat irons on the market.  Take time to research the various makes and models, to find one suitable to your needs.  Choose an iron that has authentic ceramic plates, a controllable temperature control setting, and one that has a tangle free cord.  Overall, the most important feature of are the plates.  The smoother the plates, the fewer snags, and less damage to your hair.  If your budget allows it, then you might want to invest in a professional ceramic hair straightener.

Chi Ceramic Hair Straightener: Does It Damage Your Hair?

Most ladies love the sleek feel of their hair, after using a ceramic hair straightener.  It makes our hair easier to manage, easier to style, and it looks great!  However, there are some side effects from using your flat iron too often, or from choosing the wrong type.  Here are some things to consider when you are ready to make your purchase.

We all know that the hotter the iron, the straighter the hair.  With that said, there is always going to be a certain level of heat damage that you’re going to experience, particularly if you’re going for a bone straight look.  So choose a temperature setting that will get you the desired results, without damaging your hair.   The Revlon Ceramic Hair Straightener is an inexpensive option, that gives good results for your money.

Some irons get up to 450 degrees!  (Note:  We bake chicken at 350 degrees).  That means we’re practically frying our hair every time we use this device at this setting.  Combine extreme heat, with a raggedy plate, and you’ll be bald in no time.  Ceramic hair straighteners that have a recessed plate, provide better protection from burns, and snagged hair strands, when used in conjunction with good hair care products.

It is important to respect our body in its natural state.  And heat (in moderation), beats chemicals any day of the week.  So, let’s examine how we can prevent damage.

We have to keep the cuticle of the hair shaft in good shape.  The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair strand.  Washing, conditioning, and allowing your hair to air dry will accomplish this quickly.  Keep the ends of the hair trimmed at least once a month.  Twice a month if you’re trying to promote growth.

Next, choose a ceramic hair straightener with a smooth plate.  The smoother the plate, the better for your hair.  Chemicals, when handled properly, can yield some pretty fantastic results.  Yet most people don’t use them properly, and get damaged hair as a result.  The smooth plate is worth the investment, if you want to take good care of your hair.

Don’t flatten your hair every single day.  This is easier said than done.  Giving your hair a break from the heat can only do it good.  At most, you really shouldn’t iron your hair any more than 3 or 4 times a week.  This will prevent split ends, and breakage.

The best ceramic hair straightener has a 100% authentic ceramic plate.  Yes, they will surely cost you a little more, but they are the healthiest choice for your hair.  If you’re considering buying a flat iron, get a ceramic flat iron if you can afford it.

Last, use a heat protection spray when using your iron.  This can also help lessen breakage.  Ironing dry hair will produce better results, but you need to take the necessary precautions to protect your hair.

Ceramic Hair Straighteners by Brand

Thinking about buying a ceramic hair straightener?  With all the latest hype, it’s hard to decide which type of flat iron is right for you.  Don’t be in a rush.  Taking time to compare brands might prove to be beneficial.  We’ve included a long list of available brands at the end of this article.

So, what exactly do you look for when buying a flat iron?  The answer to this question will vary, depending on the needs of the buyer.  The best ceramic hair straighteners will have 100% authentic ceramic plates, adjustable heat settings, and a swivel cord.   The prices will vary according to the manufacturer, but you need to know that these irons can be very expensive.

If you’re looking to save money, you can invest in cheap ceramic hair straighteners, but it’s not recommended.  Cheap irons have fake ceramic plates, and will damage your hair in as few as one or two uses.  This is not to say that cheap irons don’t work properly, they do.  However, know ahead of time, that they are not as healthy for your hair as irons that have real plates.

Authentic professional ceramic hair straighteners are a better choice.  Although more costly, these irons produce the best results, and do less harm to your hair.  You may consider asking your stylist the brand of the iron she uses to flatten your hair.  Factor in the cost and time it takes her to do your hair, and you may want to purchase your own.

There are also ceramic hair straighteners for men.  You can achieve some of the hottest styles sported by your favorite celebrities with a few simple techniques.  Ever seen a Mohawk, and wanted to try that style?  Now you can!  The right iron can really give you a completely new look, which is easily maintained through touch ups.

Remember, the best ceramic hair straighteners have 100% real plates, and use infra technology which locks in the moisture in your  hair.  This helps prevent burning, and breakage.  If at all possible, and your budget will allow, invest in these types of irons.
